My Springtime Prayer

I once knew a woman who

       in Autumn

       planted daffodils,

       made lists of Christmas gifts,

       planned ahead.

I once knew a woman who

      in Winter

      read seed catalogs,

      dog eared pages,

      dreamed garden beds.

I once knew a woman who

      in Springtime

filled her house with lilac blooms,

      tulip stems, forsythia buds,

      lived in the Now.

With trowel in hand

I plant my Springtime prayer,

a wreath around my heart ;

Forget me Nots of heaven’s blue,

Rosemary to remember you,

a sphere of Thyme pierced right through

by Sweet William’s crimson blood.

I once knew a woman who

      loved Springtime’s golden light,

      I remember her tonight

           as gardens bloom anew.
