outside my window

Twilight descends.

Birdcalls begin anew,

as in the dawn.

The woodpecker

taps a rhythm

hollow as my heartsounds

on this day of emptiness,

this day of no speaking.

My heart speaks

but no heart answers.

The wren sings to call his mate

and at this moment she is still.

He seems uncertain,

lost in his hopeful searching song.

Outside my window

life bursts forth with springtime’s longing.

Inside my heart

the chambers are darkening

as twilight descends.
